Our Little Sister: Deep-fried ice cream

The scene

We see Yoshino on a date at a seaside restaurant. Her boyfriend can actually be seen in the very first scene of the film but otherwise we've seen little of him thus far.

 Yoshino's boyfriend, Tomoaki.

He too is puzzled by the new sister having moved in. He mentions that the sisters turned down their father's inheritance and wonders if Suzu moving in was a ploy by the widow so that she gets all of the money. Yoshino defends Suzu, saying she is a nice girl and that it was her own decision to move to Kamakura.

Yoshino isn't particularly excited about this conversation.

The food

The waitress brings Yocchan the big round thing seen between them here:

She says it's aisu korokke - deep-fried ice cream.

Recreating the food

Are you kidding me? Another deep-fried dish? Come on. I still don't own and don't plan to get a deep fryer, so I wasn't sure how I'd go about making this particular dish. Sure, I was able to make tempura, tonkatsu and aji furai in my frying pan, but trying to cook a ball of ice cream in shallow oil seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Also, at this point I was kind of fed up with the whole oil frying thing.

Then I found something rather interesting: a "fried" ice cream recipe on Delish.com which doesn't involve frying ice cream! Ha! The point is to imitate the deep-fried coating by covering a ball of ice cream with a coating made of crushed and toasted corn flakes. You fry the crushed corn flakes in butter and add in some sugar and cinnamon - done.

Since in the scene Yoshino's dish doesn't seem to have anything special on it, I decided I'd leave out the part where they decorate the ball. Besides, I didn't exactly want to buy whipped cream, sprinkles and maraschino cherries, all of which I generally have very little use for. Here it is in all its simplicity:

I'm not sure how they were able to get the coating to stick so nicely to the ice cream. Also, maybe they used a different kind of cinnamon? My end result looks a lot darker than in the recipe. Oh well - that'd have to be good enough!

Trying it out

So - this was essentially just vanilla ice cream covered in crunchy, sugary and cinnamon-flavored corn flakes. It's good. Of course it's good.
